Why This Fashion Designer always delivers on time

Fashion designers often have a reputation for delivering late. People make jokes, memes about it on social media.

If you've ever ordered an outfit for a wedding, birthday, graduation, or another important event, you've probably heard, "abeg, e go dey ready this evening, last last tomorrow morning

Sometimes that's because of poor planning. But sometimes, it's because of something customers never see. Years ago, these complaints were common because most fashion designers relied on manual machines, which limited how much work they could complete in a day..

Now, there are electrical sewing machines, but what happens when the light goes out?

Hours are lost when the power goes out. Sewing machines stop. Pressing irons go cold. Production slows. A deadline that looked achievable in the morning suddenly becomes much harder to meet by evening.

Customers rarely think about any of that.

They simply expect their clothes to be ready when promised.

For Oke Olasope, a fashion designer based in Abeokuta, dependable power has changed that conversation. Not because it made him a better designer, but because it removed one of the biggest interruptions to running his business.

What inspired you to become a fashion designer?

Olasope: I've always enjoyed creating things. Fashion gives me the opportunity to create something people wear with confidence. When a customer smiles after wearing an outfit you've made, it's a very rewarding feeling.

What was one of your biggest business challenges before switching to solar?

Olasope: Electricity was always part of our planning. Sometimes we'd be making good progress on several orders and suddenly the power would go out. If there wasn't fuel available, or if someone had to leave the workshop to buy fuel, production slowed immediately.

Customers don't see those things. They don't know whether there was electricity or whether fuel was scarce that day. They simply expect their clothes to be ready.

Power interruptions didn't just affect production. They affected planning. Before, you couldn't always predict how much work would be completed in a day because everything depended on electricity. Today, we plan our production with much more confidence because we know work can continue.

Has reliable power affected your finances?

Olasope: Definitely. We used to spend a lot more on fuel just to keep production going. Some weeks, those costs added up more than we realised."

"Now that expense has reduced significantly. Instead of constantly buying fuel, we're able to invest more back into the business; whether that's improving our workspace, buying better materials, or planning for growth."

Has reliable power changed the way customers see your business?

Olasope: Absolutely. In fashion, trust is everything. If someone gives you fabric for their wedding or an important occasion, they're trusting you with a special moment.

When you consistently deliver on time, people remember. They come back the next time they need something, and even more importantly, they recommend you to other people.

What advice would you give another fashion designer?

Olasope: Never underestimate the value of uninterrupted power supply. Good designs will attract customers, but keeping your promises is what keeps them coming back.

Invest in the things that help your business stay consistent. When you remove unnecessary interruptions, you create more time to focus on quality, serve your customers better, and grow your business.
